It is easy to think food is unrelated to solutions for energy, water and waste. Of course, food requires energy and water, and the agricultural sector is both a major waste and emissions producer.

Food is more than just the sustenance we need to keep going each day. IGS views food more as central to communities than any of the other areas.

We socially interact around meals. Strong social bonds are created around food, supporting a socially cohesive and stable society. Good quality food leads to good health and wellbeing.

All food draws CO2 from the atmosphere. Good compost can be generated from our organic wastes. But man made nutrients supplied to the land are carried unwanted to our water systems to cause eutrophication.

Yet, food production when integrated into the solutions for energy and water can completely change the economics of those systems. Healthy locally produced food can feed even high density population areas (urban homesteading). Local food approached with purpose can build strong communities, increase health, reduce need for fuels for transport and energy for storage. And, taste better.

Additionally, high concentration health products can be easily produced from micro-algae. Micro Algae is the species responsible, at the time when Planet Earth was in its infancy, for converting the toxic soup it was into the abundance of water, and oxygen rich atmosphere, so essential for life.

Micro-algae produce by-products such as fuel oil, clean water, animal feed and fertilisers, while absorbing CO2 from our atmosphere some twenty times more effectively than most plants.

In brief

Our solutions integrate all aspects of human need: food, water, energy and waste. The result are systems that can feed off our conventional ways of living to form long-term sustainable partnerships.
